Villarreal manager Marcelino didn’t mince words when assessing Thomas Partey’s performances following a disappointing Champions League outing against Bayer Leverkusen, insisting the Ghana international has failed to live up to expectations half a year into his La Liga spell.
The former Arsenal star, who arrived as a free agent in summer 2025, was singled out in the aftermath of the 3-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League, with Marcelino drawing a stark contrast to Partey’s peak years in north London.
“Thomas [Partey], I think there’s a world of difference between the Thomas we knew at Arsenal and this one. A world of difference,” Marcelino stated. “It’s very difficult to play at this pace in today’s football.” He said.
The Villarreal boss went further, suggesting Partey has had ample opportunity to prove himself six months into his stint. “I think it’s been six months, and that’s enough time for this player to show us what he was, or what he’s showing now,” he added.
The remarks highlight growing frustration at Villarreal, where Partey was signed to bring experience and stability to the midfield but has started sparingly and completed the full 90 minutes only a handful of times.
Fans and pundits have noted his limited game time and perceived drop in intensity compared to his dominant displays for Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, where he was a key figure in title-challenging campaigns.
As Villarreal looks to focus and push in domestic competitions, pressure is mounting on the 32-year-old to respond and silence the doubters.
