Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has emerged as the latest candidate to express interest in becoming the next head coach of the Black Stars.
Kingston is currently in charge of Uganda’s junior national teams, having signed a two-year contract with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) in October 2025. His responsibilities cover Uganda’s U-15, U-17 and U-20 teams.
His work with Uganda has brought him significant attention, particularly after helping the country’s U-17 side secure qualification for the 2026 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations. He later led the team at the tournament in Morocco, where they secured World Cup qualification with victory over Ghana in a playoff.
Kingston’s interest in the Black Stars job comes at a time when the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation are searching for a replacement for Carlos Queiroz following his departure after the September international window.
A five-member search committee has been constituted to identify, assess and recommend a suitable candidate for the vacant position, with former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe serving as chairman.
Kingston is not new to the Ghana national-team setup. He previously coached the Black Starlets and had earlier worked with the Right to Dream Academy and FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark. He also spent time with RPS Academies in the United States before taking up the Uganda role.
The former Black Stars winger has previously spoken about his ambition to move into senior-team management. In January 2026, he said his target was to lead a major team at the Africa Cup of Nations or another first-team environment within five years.
Kingston has also previously indicated that he would be ready to coach the Black Stars if the right environment is created, making his latest interest significant as Ghana considers both local and foreign options for the vacant position.
His potential candidacy comes shortly after former Manchester United and Trinidad and Tobago star Dwight Yorke also expressed interest in the Black Stars job. The five-member committee is expected to submit its recommendation as Ghana begins the process of appointing a new head coach.
